Product description: In a public and church career that spanned six decades, J. Reuben Clark, Jr., acquired a vast amount of experience at the highest levels. He was indeed a brilliant, dedicated, and highly respected man. He cared deeply about his work, whether in national of international affairs or in high church service. Such deep caring is implicit in that he often and in considerable depth communicated his concerns, in writing and in speech, and more often than not he did so with a fervor that matched his impressive scholarship. This fifth and last volume of the five-volume series on the life ans work of J. Reuben Clark, Jr., is a powerful sampling of his writings and speeches about America, a sampling that well demonstrates both his fervor and his scholarship. Perhaps most dear to Reuben Clark, next to God, family, and church, was his country. Throughout his long career he wrote and spoke about his country - its origins, its founders an great leaders, its guiding documents, its successes and failures, and its probable future. And as his career progressed and matured, more and more he seems to have been compelled to warn his fellow Americans of the dangers and evils ahead. One of his biographers has said that he "seemed strangely capable of apprehending larger and more distant truths. Quite apart form his formal religious calling as a prophet, there was eerily prophetic about the things he said." He accurately predicted many of the difficulties the United States has since experienced in this century. What he predicted "Sounded strange in the thirties and forties, like a voice crying in the wilderness. Forty years later it would read like history." Like the fervor and the scholarship, many of Clark's uncanny predictions for the future are herein indicated, either explicitly of implicitly.
